And the migraine disappears

In a previous article, we mentioned that a chiropractor can be an effective way to help you get through your migraine days without a headache in a darkened room. But what is a migraine, why do you get them and how can a chiropractor help? Here.

Migraine: excruciating pain

If you've ever had a migraine (or used to) you'll know how painful and debilitating it can be. Although the symptoms are not the same for everyone, they all have in common the unrelenting pain and the inescapable attacks that can ruin not just your day, but your week. Worst of all, although headache relievers are available, there is no effective treatment for migraines in 100%. Most of the time, a darkened room, rest and relaxation can relieve it.

What exactly is a migraine?

Our heads can and do hurt in many different ways. But to qualify as a migraine, two of the following characteristics must be present:

  • Moderate to severe headache
  • Headaches are mostly unilateral
  • The pain is throbbing, but it can be a basic pain on top of the throbbing pain
  • Whatever you do (e.g. exercise, walk) "just gets worse"
  • You are sensitive to light and disturbed by sounds
  • You feel sick, you might vomit

If you have had these symptoms on at least 5 occasions (two of the symptoms listed are enough), chances are you have a migraine. Migraines affect women more often than men: 3 out of 4 migraine sufferers are women.

How to prevent it

A migraine headache can come 'out of the blue', when there seems to be no underlying cause, but there are often warning signs that you can slowly become aware of. Certain foods, bright lights, loud noises, smells, lack of sleep, dehydration, high levels of stress and even poor posture can all lead to migraines.

If you find that one of the above factors triggers a migraine (or seems to be linked), try to avoid the triggers and you will be able to avoid the migraine.

It can be a problem if you don't know exactly what triggers the migraine or if it is any of the above, because it is very difficult to avoid.

What to do if you have a migraine

It works differently for almost everyone. It's almost certain that you'll be taking headache pills, but it's far from certain that they'll work. Migraines usually require (bed)rest (the pain will make you feel like doing nothing anyway) and everyone has a tried and tested technique to get over them as quickly as possible.

The bad news is that any "I'm over it" is only a symptomatic solution, no guarantee that it won't knock you off your feet next time. And while there's no 100% cure, a chiropractor can help with prevention.

How a chiropractor can help with migraines

The most important thing is that you come to see me and tell me everything you know about your migraines (if you keep a headache diary, if you have medication, a solution or know which type you have, we're one step closer) One of the primary chiropractic treatments for migraine headaches is spinal correction, which aims to relieve pressure and stress on your body. Your spine is full of nerves, bones, blood vessels, tendons, muscles and ligaments, and if your discs are out of alignment, it can cause a host of problems.

If this problem is treated, your migraines may be less painful and occur less often. Either way, we'll find the cause and chiropractic care will help.
