How a chiropractor can help if you "can't sleep"

When was the last time you woke up feeling fully rested, "having had a good night's sleep", ready for action and looking forward to the day with energy? You don't even remember - do you? Well, you're not alone: almost one in two people have a sleep problem, which means that their sleep is not restful. But how can you finally get it "right" sleep? A chiropractor can help.

Sleep deprivation is torturous and dangerous!

Even though you've gone to bed on time, you've been tossing and turning sleeplessly in bed for hours - increasingly anxious and tense - your mind racing, your mind wide awake, you can't find your place. It's happened to all of us. It's annoying. But there's no need to panic immediately, one sleepless night or a few days of poor quality sleep shouldn't have too much impact on your daily life. Sure, you may feel tired during the day, but there's no bigger problem than that. The problem is more serious if you have a long-standing sleep disorder or chronic insomnia. In this case, you're already stressed about the evening in the afternoon, "afraid" to go to bed because you know you're in for another horrible, torturous night. And so it will be, at dawn you'll be more and more anxious and desperate to
fall asleep. This is a dangerous state to be in, as sleeplessness can lead to emotional and physical health problems and can even make it impossible for you to do simple tasks during the day: your body will become exhausted, you'll make mistakes, you'll be irritable, clumsy and simply unable to concentrate. Before you turn to sleeping pills, sedatives (or worse, drink), know that there is a solution: a chiropractor can help you.

What happens if you don't sleep well?

Nothing for a few days, you'll just be more tired. If this condition lasts for a longer period of time and you suffer from chronic sleep deprivation and insomnia, you will eventually become incredibly tired during the day, you will not be able to concentrate, you will become irritable, you may experience sudden mood swings and memory problems. Meanwhile, your immune system will quickly become exhausted and your reaction time will increase, you will feel anxious, tired and nervous. The effects of sleep deprivation get worse over time. Studies have found that long-term sleep deprivation can increase your risk of developing health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and immune dysfunction.

Of course, you can't say "sorry, I didn't sleep" every day, so you try to perform in the same way, which takes a lot of energy. You'll get even more tired while you still can't sleep: a vicious circle, because sooner or later you'll run out. Fortunately, there is a solution.

How can chiropractic treatment help?

Chiropractic work is often associated with back care, but the adjustments it makes can also help with a range of other health problems, including sleep problems. That's because, for example, spinal realignment has been shown to help the whole body function more efficiently, including relaxing your body and helping you fall asleep more easily.

Body position matters a lot

Posture and sleeping position play a huge role in our body's health and whether we sleep well. If the spine is 'misaligned', we naturally compensate with poor posture, which in turn compromises our body's ability to rest. And this can keep us awake. Bad posture can also trigger other back problems that can prevent you from sleeping. For example, if your mattress is too soft or too hard, you may not be able to fall asleep on it, but the way you try to fall asleep may not be to your body's liking. (This is why most of us 'seek our space' when we sleep. )

Stress again!

Many of us have tension in our bodies because of the stress we feel during the day, and it is often this tension that prevents us from falling asleep. You don't even feel it, but you're raging with hormones that "won't let you sleep". Chiropractic treatments help relieve the tension in your body by promoting blood flow, which allows your muscles to relax and makes it easier to fall asleep. They also help the body use energy more efficiently so you can rest easier at the end of the day.

Discomfort and pain

For many people, discomfort or pain is a barrier to restful sleep. Chiropractic care of the spine as part of chiropractic treatment provides natural pain relief in several ways. First, it "puts the spine in place" and second, it promotes blood flow throughout the body, which delivers oxygen and nutrients to areas that need healing. This helps to relieve uncomfortable pain.

Of course you have work to do. If you feel your pillow is uncomfortable, your blanket is too warm or even too cold, if "there's not enough air" or "the bed is too soft", you have to experiment. Two things are important to remember: sleeping pills, antidepressants and "go to sleep drinks" are not the answer, and neither is waking up sleepless (because you will fall asleep during the night, that's for sure, no matter how many times you sleep for 4 hours).

If you're not sleeping well, if you're having trouble falling asleep, come and see me, let's see what's wrong. Maybe one treatment can help and you can finally get a restful night's sleep!
