Why can your back hurt and how can a chiropractor help?

Back pain is one of the most common health complaints. Almost everyone can be affected - you've probably had back pain yourself - and there are many causes, from poor posture to injuries and arthritis. Back pain should not be neglected, it's not worth waiting for it to go away on its own, and it's better to see a specialist as soon as possible: a chiropractor, for example. But how can it help?

Two groups of back pain

There are countless types of back pain, thousands of ways to group it, but for you the most important question is: how long has it been hurting? The characteristic of intermittent back pain is that it starts at some point and goes away at some point. It's common to suspect the cause of this type of pain: you've been lifting yourself, injured yourself, slept badly, fallen asleep, caught a cold. Chronic back pain, on the other hand, is a non-transient pain of varying intensity that is constantly present.

How to lose time

It is interesting how much we tolerate back pain. Although it can make your daily routine difficult and inhibit you, and severe back pain can even lead to disability, many people try to get over it - even for weeks - using 'tried and tested methods'.
They think "they'll rest at the weekend" or ice it (some people heat it) as it will ease the pain for a while. If these don't help, they try over-the-counter creams and medicines (these will work, reducing the pain for a while) or some home remedies
In the meantime, time is lost because the pain persists (and may even get worse over time), becoming more difficult to bear, more unpleasant. Of course, we have not eliminated the cause, but the phenomenon, the pain.

Why might your back hurt?

There are almost countless different causes of pain. Most of the time it is caused by incorrect posture. It's not a big risk to guess that your posture is wrong at the moment: it puts extra strain on your spine. Of course, stress or physical overload can be a trigger, which can cause muscles to tighten and cause pain. Of course, spinal problems can be caused by accidents, falls or injuries during sports, as can spinal disorders, or even a poorly chosen bed mattress or pillow.

How can a chiropractor help?

I use manual therapy to restore the spine and joints. This can relieve pain, improve range of motion and reduce inflammation. I can also give you lots of good advice on how to stop the pain from recurring.

This is what you can expect when you come to me

We're spinning a little, but mainly hoping that your back pain will go away. We will also tell you what will happen step by step during the treatment.

The chiropractic treatment process:

1. Consultation: First, I'll ask you about your symptoms down to the smallest detail, I need to know how your back hurts, when it hurts, and your medical history and lifestyle. I also do a physical examination to map the movement and function of your spine and joints.

2. Treatment: Treatment starts. The first step will be to find the position where I can access the affected area most easily and simply. I will focus on one area at a time. I will apply quick, controlled pressure to a joint, but I may move a joint beyond its normal range of motion. The goal is to get the joints in a better position.

3. Whether it's one session or several, after each session I will give you advice tailored to your condition to improve posture, manage stress and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

It is important to note that you will also hear crackling and popping noises during the treatment, but this is not dangerous and will not cause you any pain. What you hear is the sound of oxygen and carbon dioxide being released from your joints.

(It is important to note that chiropractic treatment is not suitable for everyone. If you are pregnant, have a serious medical condition, or have had surgery, talk to your doctor before you see a chiropractor.)

What happens after treatment?

Most people experience an improvement (back pain is reduced and gone immediately or after a few days). It is important to follow the chiropractor's instructions and continue home treatments to promote healing.

If your back hurts, I welcome you with love: you don't have to live with the pain!
